Maria Spyraki was born at 1977 in Athens, Greece. She is a self-taught, contemporary visual artist living and working in Athens, with a wide range of work in painting and sculpture. She believes that art is a social tool that belongs to everyone, that’s why graffiti is her favorite expression. Her work could be considered diagrammatic and linear, while she always encapsulates symbols from our everyday life that create a background of meanings and a foreground of feelings.
Maria obtained her B.A.(Hons) degree in Architecture from Oxford Brookes University in 2000 and further obtained another Diploma in Architecture from Greenwich University of London in 2002. She has professionally worked as an Architect, having been assigned and completed both private and public commissions of considerable scale. Her sculptures are objects with multi level surfaces such as plexiglass, pvc and wood, combined with resin symbols (hearts, thunders, stars, fire extinguishers etc.) in repetition, playing with transparency and shadows. Her favorite study is robots and how their qualities are integrated in the life of the contemporary man / woman. The artist’s large scale paintings currently explore the diagrammatic, futuristic, evolving abstract machines. Created with meticulous and accurate detail these works illustrate spaces and describe emotions. Her field of interest is the incorporation of these machines in our present social reality.
